Overview
The target area current state map will allow you to see where everything is located in the target area, to observe how things flow, and to locate bottlenecks. By documenting the current conditions of the target area you will have accurate, real-time information about the physical set up of the target area and how work or activities flow within the physical set up.
Objectives
- Create a map of the area
- Observe activities in the target area and document the flow
- Understand how the physical space is currently being utilized
- Locate bottlenecks and problems in the area
- Begin generating ideas for improvement

Steps to Complete
- Identify the area to map
- Outline the shape of the target area on two easel pad sheets
- Draw in large items (for example, furniture and large equipment)
- Draw in smaller items
- Draw where people are located in the target area
- Show the flow of walking, transportation, conveyance, etc.
- Label all significant items
- Show problems and facts with yellow sticky notes
